Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder

What is ADHD?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a chronic neuro-behavioral disorder. It is characterized by impairments in executive functioning (e.g., inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity) and resulting challenges in daily functioning. To date, ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed disorder in children. 

ADHD Symptoms

ADHD symptoms may fall under one or more of the following categories:
Hyperactivity/Impulsivity

  • Difficulties remaining seated
  • Excessive motor activity
  • Acting without thinking
  • Talking out of turn
  • Talking excessively
  • Impatient
  • Restlessness
  • Poor frustration tolerance
  • Difficulties participating in quiet and/or sedentary activities

Inattention

  • Poor concentration
  • Forgetfulness
  • Easily distracted
  • Often overlooks details
  • Difficulties initiating and/or completing tasks (e.g., homework, exams, chores)
  • Poor listening skills
  • Difficulties following instructions
  • Often loses belongs (e.g., homework, cell phone, glasses, books)

Advantages of an ADHD Evaluation

  • Research has proven that early diagnosis and intervention significantly improves outcomes for individuals diagnosed with ADHD
  • A thorough diagnostic evaluation also assesses the presence of co-occurring diagnoses commonly associated with ADHD which may further complicate and exacerbate an individual’s symptoms
  • A formal diagnosis(es) provides comprehensive information regarding the following:
    • Best means of providing instruction
    • Accommodations and/or structural changes that will improve academic attainment
    • Identify the most appropriate interventions that meets an individual’s specific needs (e.g., behavior modification, medication evaluation, individual therapy)
